Introduction

How to Install a Smart Lock

In today's digital age, smart locks have become essential for modern homes, offering convenience like keyless entry and remote monitoring. But to enjoy features like Venokey™ palm-vein recognition (unlocking in <1 second with 99.99% accuracy) on Lockin Veno Pro/Plus, knowing how to install a smart lock is key.

This guide breaks down the installation process for Lockin’s innovative smart locks. Before diving into steps, let’s cover essential prep—because a successful install starts with the right tools and setup.

Tools and Materials Needed

The requirements below may vary based on your door’s existing setup. For compatible doors, installation may only require basic tools, while others might need minor adjustments:

Basic Tools:

- Phillips screwdriver (for mounting screws and interior assembly).

- Tape measure and pencil (to verify door dimensions and mark alignment points).

- Level (to ensure the lock is vertically aligned).

Optional Tools (for modifications):

- Power drill with standard drill bits (only if pilot holes or cable channels are needed for your door type).

Lock Components Included in the Kit:

- Veno Pro/Plus lock unit (exterior and interior modules).

- Latch, deadbolt, mounting screws, backup mechanical key.

Smartphone Requirement:

- A smartphone with the Lockin Smart app (iOS/Android) for setup, user enrollment, and firmware updates.

*Note: Always check your door’s compatibility before purchasing. No special tools are needed for standard installations on compatible doors.

Step-by-Step Installation Process

Installation Process

Step 1: Check the lock body type

 Currently, the Lockin Veno series only supports the standard American deadbolt lock type.

Step 2: Prepare Your Door

  It is suitable for doors that meet the following conditions:
* Lock Body: American Standard Deadbolt Lock Body
* Door Thickness: 1⅜ in- 2¹¹/₆₄ in(35-55 mm)
* Crossbore Diameter: 2⅛ in / 54 mm
* Backset: 2⅜ in / 60 mm or 2¾ in / 70 mm
* Door Hole Diameter: 1 in / 25.4 mm
* Deadbolt Latch Box Depth: ≥25.4mm (1 in)
* Minimum Distance Between Handle and Crossbore Center(For Solar Charge Panel Installation): 3 in / 75 mm

*Compatible with Single Cylinder, Storm Doors or Mortise Locks NOT Compatible
*Note that Lockin Veno series is not compatible with storm doors as the storm door may block the camera. We recommend that you ensure your door is a standard entry door without a storm door before installing this producct.
*Works with doors that have a rectangular latch faceplate cutout. Not compatible with round faceplate cutouts.

Step 3: Install Exterior Assembly

1. Measure the diameter of the cross bore. If 2% in / 54 mm, install the exterior assembly directly.

2. Ensure the exterior assembly is vertical and securely fastened.

If possible, find a nearby family member or friend to assist you insecuringthe exterior assembly,ensuring it remains in vertical orientation.

Step 4: Install the Mounting Plate

1. Detach the mounting plate and battery cover from the interior assembly.

2. Run the cables through the slot on the mounting plate.

3. Align the mounting plate with the threaded screw.

Step 5: Install Interior Assembly

1. Plug the power cable,door status cable, and Wi-Fi cable into the sockets on the interior assembly.

2. Insert the tailpiece into the T-shaped slot on the interior assembly.

Ensure that the cables are neatly stored within the cable hiding space on the interior assembly. Make sure the deadbolt latch is retracted and adjust the thumbturn to a vertical position. Arrange the cables to avoid pinching them when inserting the tailpiece into the interior assembly.

3. Check whether the latch can extend and retract smoothly by rotating the thumbturn without getting stuck.

4. Insert the rechargeable battery, close the battery cover, and check whether the device can connect to power and work properly.

Step 6: Power-Up and Initial Testing

Start by opening the battery compartment on your interior assembly. Both kits come with pre-installed lithium batteries for quick and hassle-free setup.

After securing the batteries, the keypad will illuminate with a white light to indicate power activation. This confirms that the lock’s AI-powered sensors, camera, and motor are operational.

Next, manually test the thumbturn mechanism to ensure the deadbolt moves smoothly. Once the physical installation is complete, proceed to the digital setup and user enrollment through the Lockin Smart app.

Step 7: Set Up via Lockin Smart App

From your smartphone, open the App Store or Google Play and search for “Lockin Smart”, and install the official Lockin Smart app. Once installed, launch the app and either create or log into your Lockin account.

Once logged in, tap “Add Device” and scan the QR code printed on the interior assembly. The app will use Bluetooth to automatically detect the Veno Pro or Veno Plus and guide you through the initial setup. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect your new smart lock securely to your wifi home network, which will enable remote access, video streaming, and firmware updates down the line.

Next comes enrollment, which is essentially registering your palm vein with your lock. Enroll your palm-vein profile by placing your hand over the sensor one time, during which the animation in the app will guide you. Lastly, you’ll be able to set up additional users by assigning unique PIN codes to them or inviting them through the app’s user management interface.

Step 8: Test the Lock Functionality

With both the installation and initial setup complete, it’s time to verify and test your new smart lock.

Approach your home’s exterior and unlock using your palm-vein enrollment, and you should feel the deadbolt motor release instantly.

Next, enter one of the PIN codes on the touchscreen, and with each tap, you should hear a soft beep, and after the last digit, you should hear the bolt retracting.

Now test the mechanical backup key in the cylinder to make sure it turns smoothly in case of an emergency.

From the inside, use the app to lock and unlock the door remotely, observe the live video feed, and communicate with someone outside to test that the two-way audio communication is transmitting clearly.

Finally, confirm the auto-lock features by waiting for the preset interval, after which your lock should secure itself without manual intervention.

Troubleshooting Common Installation Issues

Even with plenty of preparation and the right tools, you should still be prepared to hit at least one or two unexpected elements before, during, or after your installation. Here, we’ll go over a handful of the most common issues and how to cope with them, so you don’t have to worry about finding the solution if you find yourself in one of these situations.

One of the most common issues is a binding deadbolt, where the deadbolt doesn't fully extend or retract. This problem usually stems from a misaligned latch or strike plate, but it can often be resolved quickly through realignment. To address it, first, remove the interior assembly. Ensure that the latch plate is evenly and firmly installed within the door frame, with no gaps between the plate and the door edge, as any unevenness can cause the bolt to bind.
For optimal performance, it’s crucial to install the provided magnetic-resistance strike plate:

  1. Align the strike plate's magnetic components precisely with the corresponding magnets on the lock body. This alignment is essential for seamless deadbolt movement and enhanced security.
  2. If the initial installation doesn't eliminate binding, slightly loosen the screws to adjust the plate's position. If that doesn't work, carefully file or sand the mortise area until the plate fits flush, ensuring the necessary clearance for the deadbolt to operate smoothly.

Connectivity problems are common once you move to the app-based portion of the setup process. Lockin smart locks use 2.4GHz wifi, so if you have a 5GHz-only router, you’re not going to see your lock join the network. You’ll need to log into the administrator interface for your router, and either enable a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID or get a dual-band router.

Video feed stuttering or pixelation usually points to insufficient network bandwidth or local interference. The LockinCam™ streams 2K video at up to 30 frames per second, which needs a stable uplink of at least 2 Mbps to thrive. If you have metered internet or if your router can’t support that level of throughput, you’ll need to lower the stream resolution in the Lockin app’s camera settings or upgrade your broadband package.

Finally, enrollment errors may occur if conditions aren’t optimal. For palm-vein enrollment, ensure stable, even lighting—avoid direct sunlight or harsh shadows. Hold your palm at the recommended distance from the sensor (not too close or too far), keeping it still until the progress bar completes. Ensure the palm area is clean and free of obstructions—remove jewelry or debris that might obscure vein patterns before enrollment.
